Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani ends a three-year absence with his fifth album, “The Extremist.” Seeking greater dimension, the rock instrumentalist departs from the one-man-band philosophy of past efforts to incorporate sidemen. The result is rather disappointing.

Three cuts, including the feisty title tune, click. But the balance of the disc finds Satch slipping into new age fret frivolity.
