R.E.M.: Automatic for the People (1992)

rem automaticBy Scott Goldfine

Athens, Ga.-based R.E.M., which vaulted from alternative to mainstream status with 1990’s huge “Out of Time” album, keeps the fire burning on “Automatic for the People. Setting pretty, haunting melodies to strummed accompaniments, rock’s reigning minstrels excel on these mostly relaxed, pensive songs.

There’s nothing as indelible as “Losing My Religion,” but the overall package is solid.
