Funky to a T-Connection: Memories With Guitarist Mackey – Watch NOW!

Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.

Featured in this two-part series: T-Connection Guitarist David Mackey talks about his vital contributions to the Nassau, Bahamas-based funk-disco band that released eight albums from 1976-84 and scored five U.S. Top 40 R&B hits. Along with other key members that included brothers Theophilius Coakley as band leader and Kirkwood Coakley on bass with Anthony Flowers on drums, the group delivered such fiery funk fare as “Funkannection,” “Totally Connected,” “Groove City” and “Everything Is Cool.” The group also shined on ballads like “Love Supreme.” T-Connection’s “Do What You Wanna Do” and “At Midnight” made it to No. 46 and 56 respectively on Billboard’s pop charts.

Among the topics Mackey discusses are how he developed his guitar style as a Bahamas transplant growing up in the Chicago area; T-Connection’s origins and members; how it developed its unique blend of island, funk, disco, R&B, blues and rock influences; details about specific albums and songs; what life was like at the height of success, and rubbing elbows with superstars in studio and on stage; later works with musicians like George Duke and Tom Scott; and why the group dissolved and where things stand today.
