Watch George Clinton & P-Funk Funk Up Charlotte (April 27, 2017)

George Clinton and his madcap, funky-as-hell band spanning three generations of P-Funk stormed the Fillmore Charlotte stage Thursday night, April 28, 2017. I have seen them dozens of times from the 1970s through every successive decade and this current lineup to me has the strongest energy since at least the 1990s.

At 76, Clinton is an absolute marvel. He was on stage for the entire show, often firing up the crowd into a frothy funk frenzy as the band’s intensity scarcely waned during more than two hours. The packed house sure ate it all up with a big fat groove-bottomed ladle.

I loved updates of “The Goose” and the new young (for P-Funk) girls taking center stage for “Vanish in Our Sleep.” Also dug hearing the new (“Shake the Gate” LP) material live, the energy of the new generation up there, and how they are taking their time in the pocket and not rushing the rhythm with the classics like has sometimes been the case in the past.

Got to hang a bit with guitar master Blackbyrd McKnight and keyboard wiz Danny Bedrosian. Hope to have them and Mudbone (yes, he was there!) on upcoming episodes of “TRUTH IN RHYTHM.”
