Depeche Mode: Ultra (1997)

British synth-pop act Depeche Mode has overcome singer Dave Gahan’s heroin woes to release their first album since 1993’s “Songs of Faith and Devotion.” Sinewy grooves, seductively lush textures, Gahan’s brooding delivery and Martin Gore’s melancholy lyrics about making connections in a disconnected world continue to be the group’s trademarks.

They’ve done better, but fans should be pleased.
