Inventive director Tim Burton has followed up one of last year’s best films, “Ed Wood,” with one of this year’s worst. This star-studded send-up of 1950s alien invasion scenarios offers some of Burton’s trademark visual ingenuity, but fails in every other conceivable way.
Relentlessly over the top, this witless spectacle makes the similar “Independence Day” seem like an Oscar contender. The all-star cast includes Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan and at least a dozen other poor lost souls. Rated PG-13.
