“Tales From the Punchbowl,” the fourth long-play from quirky, Bay Area-based rock trio Primus, just may be their best. Bass-playing wizard Les Claypool and his cohorts strayed too far into musical obliqueness the last time out, but this disc finds them balancing goofiness and chunky, streamlined funk grooves with pleasing measure.
Not bad for a band without a conventional lead singer or songs.
