Minneapolis-based superstar Prince has released his first nonsoundtrack LP, “Diamonds and Pearls,” since 1988’s ambitious, but commercially disappointing “Lovesexy.” Boasting a new band (the New Power Generation), the adventurous musician adds a new ingredient to his rock-funk stew, rap.
More subdued than in the past, Prince seems bent on mass appeal, hence diluting his genius for an average album.
