Borne out of a casting call for the film of the same name, Irish group the Commitments work through 14 R&B classics on their debut LP. Five different singers trade lead vocal duties, with 17-year-old Andrew Strong, who sounds like a cross between Joe Cocker and U2’s Bono, generating the most heat.
It’s tough to go wrong with such serviceable material, but this LP is more pleasant than powerful.
