The Postman (1995)

By Scott Goldfine

Set in 1952 and based on a true story, this charming Italian film centers around a fisherman-turned-postman (the late Massimo Troisi) who idolizes and befriends Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. The postman’s small-island eyes are opened and his soul invigorated by the poet, who helps him woo his wife-to-be.

Richly acted, engaging and amusing, the film (originally titled “Il Postino”) also packs an unexpectedly moving coda. Rated PG.
