Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in this 3-part series: Drummer-singer-composer Neftali Santiago, also known as Funkadrill based on the key role he played as a member of Mandrill — the progressive, 1970s New York-based ensemble that fused soul, funk and world music influences to become one of the most original, accomplished and respected bands of its generation. Building its reputation on intense live performances and conceptual albums, Mandrill charted and received radio play with songs that included “Ape Is High,” “Git It All,” “Fencewalk,” “Hang Loose,” “Mango Meat,” “Positive Thing” and “Funky Monkey.” All told, the band released 11 albums from 1970-1982, with the greatest impact being the first five records they cut for Polydor that included the group’s third LP and biggest success, 1973’s Composite Truth, which peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Soul Albums Chart.
In this three-part series, Santiago covers Mandrill’s history and some astounding stories, discusses a new compilation of tracks recorded by his band Santiago from 1976-1978, speaks on an amazing slab of vintage-sounding funk he has issued featuring late, great P-Funk members Garry Shider and Cordell “Boogie” Mosson called “Release the Funk,” and gets into how he has assembled an ace lineup called Funkadrill Presents the Drill Experience to bring the Mandrill sensation back to the stage.
