James Brown is one of the few classic R&B artists getting his due in the digital age. The two-disc set “Foundations of Funk – A Brand New Bag: 1964-1969” is one of many recent compilations on the Godfather of Soul, and it’s one of the best.
Rhythm workouts like “Cold Sweat” and “Mother Popcorn” can be found elsewhere, but the package’s cohesiveness and previously unreleased versions make it special.
