A Scottish ex-con named Stevie (Robert Carlyle) attempts to straighten out his life in this modest, bittersweet comedy targeting Britain’s downtrodden working class. Having taken on a construction job, Stevie, and his misguided girlfriend set up house in an abandoned apartment building.
This Ken Loach-directed film, whose characters’ accents are so authentically thick they may require subtitles, is funny, incisive and sad. Unrated.
