Percussionist extraordinaire Sheila E. returns to the solo spotlight following four years of peripheral projects on “Sex Cymbal.” As with her previous three LPs, the former Prince protégé unabashedly perpetuates her mentor’s sound, occasionally tapping into his adventurous style.
But she plays it too safe on much of this set. Exceptions are the Latin-tinged “Droppin’ Like Flies” and the jazzy “Heaven.”
