Seattle-based hard-rock quartet Soundgarden, which exploded into the mainstream with 1994’s masterful “Superunknown,” has returned with its fifth album, the 16-track “Down on the Upside.” Singer Chris Cornell’s lyrics have never been bleaker on an LP barren of the hooks and gloss that made its predecessor so accessible.
But the band’s broth of grungy metal remains challenging and stimulating.
