Brought to you by Funknstuff.net and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in this three-part series: Drummer Lanise Hughes and percussionist Nate Hughes, original and founding members of the Stone City Band, the backing band for the late, great and notorious funk music superstar Rick James. They hopped aboard James’ punk-funk extravaganza during his meteoric rise in the late 1970s, were key players helping his Street Songs album achieve a new plateau of success in the early 1980s, and stuck around long enough to see the empire begin to crumble later in the decade. In addition to James’ albums, the Stone City Band recorded three records of their own and backed James protégé acts like Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls, as well as famed performers like the Temptations and Eddie Murphy. Hits they played on included “You and I,” “Super Freak,” “Mary Jane,” “Bustin’ Out,” “Give It to Me Baby,” “I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love,” “In My House,” “Party All the Time” and “Standing on the Top.”
The series tells how some of funk music’s greatest albums and songs were created, recorded and performed; what it was like working for the highly gifted yet troubled Rick James; behind-the-scenes stories from the studio and stage; how the legacy is enduring today; and much more. Get the real, inside dope from the guys who lived it!
