Oliver Stone once again turns his camera on the 1960s, this time recounting the rise and crash of Jim Morrison and his band. Val Kilmer gives a mind-boggling performance as Morrison, a singer who always kept drugs, booze and women within arm’s reach.
This film is alternatively exhilarating and numbing, insightful and pretentious. It’s a triumph for all concerned, yet it’s fiercely disturbing. Also stars Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLachlan, Frank Whaley, Kevin Dillon and Michael Madsen, with musicians Billy Idol and John Densmore making appearances. Rated R.
