Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott “DR GX” Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 153 (3 parts): One of three founding brothers of one of the most popular and successful R&B groups of the 1980s and 90s — percussionist, trombonist and composer Jonathan Lewis of the prolific Atlantic Starr.
The band scored five consecutive Top 10 R&B albums from 1981-1987 and racked up an amazing 16 Top 20 hit singles between 1978 and 1991. Those tracks include “Send for Me,” “Circles,” “Touch a Four-Leaf Clover,” “Freak-A-Ristic,” “Secret Lovers,” “If Your Heart Isn’t in It,” “My First Love,” “Masterpiece” and “Always,” which went to No. 1 on both the R&B and pop singles charts.
After taking a nearly 20-year hiatus from album releases, Atlantic Starr came back as strong as ever with a new set in 2017, and the group continues to set stages afire. Here Jonathan Lewis takes it from Atlantic Starr precursor Newban all the way to present day, with compelling stories and insights throughout.
