Featured in TIR Episode 196 (2 parts): Singer/songwriter/producer Kipper Jones! Starting out as a Motown session singer in Los Angeles while still just a teen, he would go on to lead the vastly underappreciated 1980s funk band Tease, and collaborate with some of black music’s biggest stars.
Those successes include spearheading Vanessa Williams’ vocal stardom with hits like “The Right Stuff” and “The Comfort Zone,” Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” and “Baby,” Kenny Lattimore’s “Never Too Busy,” and films like Robert Townsend’s “The Five Heartbeats.” Other artists he has been associated with include Anita Baker, Teddy Pendergrass, Teena Marie, Lauryn Hill, Sly Stone, Paul Jackson, Chante Moore, Brian McKnight, Chaka Khan, Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men, Wayman Tisdale and Patti Austin.
In all, he has been part of seven Top 20 and three No. 1 R&B hits. His solo work includes last year’s remake of Rose Royce’s classic, “Wishing on a Star,” and he also hosts the “Know Better With Kipper Jones” podcast.
