Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott “DR GX” Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 166 (3 parts): Bassist-singer-composer Lonnie Marshall, also known as Mega-Nut, who is the founder and leader of the wild and woolly funk band Weapon of Choice. Heavily influenced by Parliament-Funkadelic, he conceptualized the group’s so-called Nutmeg grooves that were first heard on its 1994 debut album. That was followed by more than a half-dozen Weapon of Choice and Lonnie Marshall albums — all of them refreshingly quirky, fun and superfunky.
Having also performed and recorded with greats like George Clinton, Fishbone, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chaka Khan, Ice Cube and even Bette Midler, Marshall is still bringing amazing music to the masses. This year has been marked by digital re-releases of Weapon of Choice’s catalog as well as a new album called Cosmic Relief, Groove Healing & Verbal Remedies.
Here he covers the gamut, including his guitarist brother Arik Marshall, P-Funk heroes, growing up on the streets of Los Angeles and lots more.
