Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott “DR GX” Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 134 (3 parts): One of the deepest purveyors of hardcore funk, who since the 1990s has flown farthest off the mainstream radar — Phillip Jones, more commonly referred to as Phil the Funky Instrumentalist, and PTFI for short.
With throbbing bass, sputtering synth and psychedelic guitar and a sensibility perhaps best described as P-Funk meets Dr. Dre, PTFI has released five albums of his own and produced several for other artists. All of them are wall-to-wall heavy funk, and along the way he has worked with U.S. Funk Mob members such as George Clinton, Cordell Boogie Mosson, Tracey Lewis and Michael Hampton. His latest, The Future Is Now 2020, came out the first of this year.
Here Jones shares how he became a lifelong funkateer, his musical inspirations and techniques, and why he will always remain true to uncompromising funk.
