Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 114 (2 parts): Singer Steve Boyd, best known as a member of the soul-funk vocal group Five Special, and later through studio work and regular appearances with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic.
Five Special dropped three albums from 1979-1981 that included slamming tracks like “Why Leave Us Alone” — which was a Top 10 R&B smash — “Jam (Let’s Take It to the Streets),” “Choosin’ You for Me,” “Your Body Heat” and “Lov-A-Thon,” as well as smooth ballads like “You’re Something Special” and “Spread Love (All Over the World).”
In addition to touring extensively with P-Funk as a lead and background vocalist through the years, Boyd has appeared on albums such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Clinton-produced Freaky Styley, Clinton’s own R&B Skeletons in the Closet, P-Funk All-Stars’ Dope Dogs and The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership, last year’s A Cosmic Jazz Funk Adventure by Detroit Rising, and recordings by Paul Schaffer, Amp Fiddler and Kendra Foster, among others. He has also released a few of his own projects, including a recent live CD.
