Set in the 1950s, Diane Keaton’s second foray into feature-film directing is a quirky, misfired tragedy about how a mother’s terminal illness affects her family. The story is conveyed through the experiences of a 13-year-old boy, who’s kept in the dark about his ailing mom (Andie MacDowell) by his strict dad (John Turturro).
The film’s bizarre comedy further undermines its engaging melodrama. Also stars Michael Richards. Rated PG.
