An African-born Indian girl (newcomer Sarita Choudhury), transplanted to Mississippi, causes a commotion when she becomes involved with a black man (Denzel Washington) in this romantic tale. The girl and her family, expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin’s regime, have more in common with poor Southern blacks than they care to admit.
The film’s standard story is enhanced by an unusual cross-cultural slant. Rated R.
