New York’s black and Latino transvestite-transsexual phenomenon is the topic of this entertaining documentary from young filmmaker Jennie Livingston. Shot over the course of several years, this film intersperses competitions at gay balls with interviews of the participants to shed light on a shocking yet fascinating subculture.
Once inside their world, these characters become very touching. Rated R.
