Carson McCullers’ highly regarded novella concerning the power and irony of love, “The Ballad of the Sad Café,” has been cast onto the silver screen. Set in a small, dusty town, it’s about a powerful and respected woman (Vanessa Redgrave) whose lift is destroyed by the husband (Keith Caradine) she spurned and the cousin she loved.
This vague, depressing adaptation is an unequivocal failure. Also stars Rod Steiger. Rated PG-13.
