Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 120 (3 parts): Vocalist and composer Steve van Rijn, a.k.a. Longsleevemastah, of the Netherlands-based hardcore funk band OctavePussy. Founded in 1996 by Steve and his brother, Joris, along with Edwin Konings, and with several lineups through the years including Edwin’s twin brother Arno, the name OctavePussy is also a cartoon character featured on Parliament’s 1978 masterpiece, The Motor Booty Affair. The Mr. Wiggles reference above pertains to another Motor Booty character and one of George Clinton’s many alter egos.
Massively influenced by P-Funk, OPY, the band’s acronym, has released a half-dozen albums since 2001, many of which feature various Funk Mob alumni, including Clinton himself. OPY’s latest effort is an all-out tribute to The Motor Booty Affair that is packed with first-rate funk including a remake of Parliament’s Mothership Connection’s “Unfunky UFO.”
Here van Rijn covers the band’s history, the Dutch music scene and his P-Funk heroes.
