Featured in TIR Episode 297 (2 parts): Renowned jazz, R&B and funk keyboardist, singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and musical director Patrice Rushen. Flying out of the gate in the early 1970s as a teen, she released a trio of jazz-funk albums before putting together a run of six straight Top 30 R&B albums and seven Top 30 singles from 1978-1987. Those hit songs included the heavy grooving “Hang It Up,” “Haven’t You Heard” and “Forget Me Nots.”
Having also performed countless sessions for others, Rushen returned to her jazz roots in the late 1990s while also expanding into television and film. Among the notable artists she has worked with are Lenny White, Najee, Gerald Albright, Ronnie Laws, Sonny Rollins, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Stanley Clarke, Prince (full story in this Part 2!), Teena Marie, Paul McCartney, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones and Babyface, and she continues to do live shows.
