Featured in WYGYFF Episode 48: Legendary Los Angeles and Southern California mobile disc jockey and personality Michael Hayes, better known as DJ Shell of L.A. Starting out during the late 1970s spinning records at house parties and school dances in Santa Monica, Calif., his dedication, mixing and emcee talent, and growing reputation to rock crowds spread fast, far and wide. He parlayed that into working weddings, corporate events, nightclubs, concerts, festivals, cruises and more that spread his talents abroad.
Growing up myself in Santa Monica, I’ve known him since about the time he first got into the mobile DJ game and I experienced firsthand how he packed dancefloors. Having already been long immersed in black culture and music, I was inspired by him and he helped mentor and guide my subsequent mobile DJ career. For that I am forever grateful.
Here, Shell recounts nearly a half-century spanning thousands of gigs, nightclub engagements, breaking new music, rubbing elbows with celebrities, and more.
