Featured in TIR Episode 206 (Parts 1-3): Detroit-based percussionist Carl Butch Small, who for more than four decades has added his special flavor to funk, soul and rap recordings by a host of genre stars. Most notably, he worked with George Clinton and P-Funk during the late 1970s and early 1980s, performing on albums by Parliament, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Parlet, Brides of Funkenstein, Sweat Band and the Horny Horns.
Among the R&B stars Small played with were Enchantment, Five Special, the Dramatics, Was (Not Was), R.J.’s Latest Arrival, Michael Henderson, David Ruffin and Mariah Carey. He then went on to appear on scores of West Coast gangsta rap tracks, including those from Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Kurupt, and he continues to record today.
