Featured in TIR Episode 175 (2 parts): Emanuel “E.J.” Johnson, a founding and current member of the wonderful 1970s and 1980s soul vocal act, Enchantment! Comprised of five singers and guided by producer Michael Stokes, the Detroit-based group enchanted listeners with several hits, including four consecutive top 15 R&B singles from 1976-1978. Those were “Gloria,” which also crossed over to reach No. 25 on the pop chart, “Sunshine,” “It’s You That I Need” and “If You’re Ready (Here It Comes).”
Primarily known for their emotive ballads, Enchantment notched three straight top 25 R&B albums through 1980. The group recorded a half-dozen albums in all, last charting in 1984. Since then Johnson has continued to lead Enchantment through performances to keep warming the hearts of fans everywhere.
Here he goes in depth from growing up with Stevie Wonder to sharing bills with Parliament-Funkadelic to reaching the pinnacle of success and carrying on the enduring Enchantment legacy.
