Featured in TIR Episode 235 (2 parts): Funk and soul singer Martha High, known as the Goddess of Soul for her more than 30 years of touring, performing and recording with the Godfather of Soul himself – Mr. James Brown. Having opened on tour for Brown in 1964 as a member of the vocal girl group, The Jewels, she stayed on and went on to work with J.B. all the way through the mid-1990s.
Recording her first solo album in 1979, High went on to release several sets of first-rate funky soul that continued right on up to present day. She has also worked on projects by others from Brown’s camp, such as Bobby Byrd, Lyn Collins and Maceo Parker. In 2017, she released her autobiography, “He’s a Funny Cat, Ms. High: My 32 Years Singing With Mr. James Brown.” Her newest album – yet another fantastic collection of funk and soul gems – is titled, Got My Senses Back.
