Featured in TIR Episode 211 (Parts 1-2): Guitarist and composer Simon Bartholomew, a founding member of one of the most prominent acid jazz and funk groups of all time — England’s The Brand New Heavies! After making a splash with its debut album in 1990, the band would go on to release 10 more studio albums, the most recent being 2019’s TBNH.
Influenced by the likes of James Brown, Tower of Power and Average White Band, from 1991 through 1999, the Heavies notched 15 Top 40 singles in the U.K. and four Top 20 on the U.S. R&B chart. Those included “Never Stop,” “Stay This Way,” “Dream On Dreamer” and “Sometimes.”
